To move muscles effectively your brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) sends signals down to the muscles (peripheral nervous system). When damage occurs to the nervous system the signals do not quite get there. That is where neuro physiotherapy comes in to see what is affected in the body, get those nervous system signals going again, retrain normal movement pathways or tap into alternative pathways/strategies.
Treatment in neurological conditions is typically based upon exercises to restore motor function through attempting to overcome motor deficits and improve motor patterns.
In what conditions is neurological physiotherapy used?
Any neurological condition that affects movement and physical ability can be treated using neurophysiotherapy. Some common conditions in which this is useful include:
Stroke
Traumatic brain Injury/head Injury
Spinal cord injury
Multiple sclerosis (MS)
Parkinson’s disease
Bell’s palsy
Physiotherapy treatment will help:
Make movements easier to achieve that are precise and goal directed
